According to Robert Marzano“Homework and practice are related and connected by the context when students are learning on their own and applying new knowledge.” Homework is generally defined as practice or studying done by the student outside the classroom and is related to academic performance.
Reasons For Homework
Teachers assign homework for several reasons all in which to help the student excel.
(1) Teachers use homework as an independent review for the students.
(2) Teachers assign homework to prepare students for the following day.
(3) Assigning homework allows students to use resources (I.e. If a student is unsure of a homework question or needs extra information the internet could provide as a resource.)
(4) Assigning homework also allows for the student to complete any in class assignment at home without the pressure of being rushed for time.
Effective Homework
As a teacher it is important to assign homework that will be effective and will ultimately benefit the student. For elementary students homework should be established to increase good learning and study habits.
(1) Assignments need to have a specific purpose.
(2) Assignments need to be meaningful.
(3) Assignments need to be on grade level.
(4) Assignments need to be assigned that go further in depth on information that has been talked about inside the classroom.
For young children successfully completing homework at home opens up a great door of opportunities. Successfully completing homework at a young age can help students develop good habits and attitudes. Working on assignments at home gets the student to think independently. Students also learn how to manage their time.
Parent Involvement
Homework can also get parents involved in the school process. Having a strong and positive connection with your student’s parents from the beginning of the school year will only benefit yourself as a teacher. If your students’ parents have a positive outlook on your class so will your students.
Nemo is a famous film that we all know and love and as a future educator this is how excited I would like my students to be with school!
It is very important as an educator to remember to always assign homework on grade level. Parent involvement with the homework should be minimal. Parents should not feel that they need to take place of the teacher while they are home. A good way for the parents to get involved with homework is by providing students with a quiet and positive homework area.
Studies
According to Durham, N.C Duke University researchers have reviewed more than 60 research studies on homework between 1987 and 2003 and concluded that homework does have a positive effect on student achievement. "With only rare exception, the relationship between the amount of homework students do and their achievement outcomes was found to be positive and statistically significant," the researchers report in a paper that appears in the spring 2006 edition of "Review of Educational Research."
